And there’s even a dallop of action/adventure trigger-pulling once Rani augments her robotic vacuum hand with a pulse-cannon add-on. Gameplay wise, The Gunk features lots of platform climbing and jumping, some puzzle solving, and upgrades through item collection. Rani explores the planet and its hidden secrets-uncovering relics of a (lost?) civilization sucking up usable materials and gunk and bringing life back to the world and slowly revealing the truth behind what happened to this victimized planet.
Oh, and there are new paths to follow once the gunk is cleaned away, too.
Armed with a multipurpose bionic hand device-that Rani affectionately calls Pumpkin-she quickly sucks up this gunk and finds that when she does, the local fauna begins to spring back to life. But what little of the stuff Rani discovers is also being swallowed up and strangled out by blobs of seemingly noxious, bubbling gunk. Playing as the optimistic Rani, you do indeed find little pockets of glowing energy once you hit the surface. There is, however, an energy reading that the pair of pals are picking up that may well mean a solid payday if they can find what’s giving off those vibes.
The Gunk focuses on two young space scavenger friends, Rani and Becks, who gamble what little fuel they have to land their salvage ship on what looks to be a somewhat dead planet. But more importantly, it has you cleaning and sucking up a whole lot of bubbling gunk. A new platforming adventurer called The Gunk offers players some smaller if similar goals. (Dec.Some adventure games send you off to save the universe and others challenge you to best a great evil. Lau has plenty of talent, but while this starts strong, it falls apart at the end. Lau makes some good points about consumerism and ably captures the mood of disenchanted youth, but the slow pacing and underdeveloped supporting characters make this feel aimless. Then, Leen’s roommates ask her to move out so that they can focus on their new business manufacturing synthetic human urine to help people beat drug tests, and she becomes romantically involved with Luis, the manager of a successful franchise of a large Chinese lifestyle brand.

As Leen struggles to attract customers, she meets Jean Paul, a smarmy pharmacist who invites her to a community group advocating for better treatment of retail employees, and becomes the reluctant getaway driver (Jean Paul doesn’t have a car) for the group’s “Resisting Acts,” a series of increasingly malevolent pranks on stores in Topic Heights. New business owner Leen, 24, originally from Hong Kong, attempts to attract Westerners to the traditional Chinese art of ear cleaning with Lotus Fusion Studio, which she operates out of a shopping complex called Topic Heights. In Australian writer Lau’s imaginative if underpowered sophomore effort (after Pink Mountain on Locust Island), a young woman opens a business in a sinister shopping mall.
